Module Format:

Musculoskeletal I is divided into 2 segments, part A and part B. Each segment is 36.5 hours of class time, totaling 73 hours. Completion of the module requires 11 hours of asynchronous learning (self-study) and 24 hours of yoga therapy with volunteers for practicum.

Module Description:

Musculoskeletal I covers review of client pathology and documenting client intake especially as it relates to musculoskeletal issues; evaluation, decision-making and delivery of yoga therapy interventions is linked to client intake and client goals.

For Musculoskeletal conditions, “Quick Fixes” (those protocols which work in the majority of cases), Level I Therapeutics (more in-depth) and Maintenance Therapeutics are covered. More severe conditions are discussed; more detail on these conditions is covered in Musculoskeletal II. Adaptations as needed for daily living are covered for different conditions. Surgery basics are covered, including total hip and knee replacements.

Therapist trainees will participate in the residential clinic/workshop and be assigned one or more students/clients to work with for three days under the supervision of senior faculty.  Assigned case studies and research assignments form part of the practicum assigned to each student. All class material and assigned readings can be utilised for the purpose of completing assignments, which will be assessed at the end of the module.

Clinics and practicums will be observed, and immediate oral feedback will be given. Confidential feedback from volunteer clients will be provided. Trainees are given a musculoskeletal yoga therapy topic and are required to prepare a presentation on this topic for part 2 of this module.
