Course Introduction:

This is the foundational module of Sat Sangat Yoga Therapy training. It provides many practical foundational skills necessary for a safe and effective yoga therapy practice. It includes training on how to conduct intake interviews and yoga therapy assessments using models based on Yoga and Ayurveda philosophy, and how to document information based on Western allopathic and Yogic perspectives.

Course Description:

The Foundations module explores a therapeutic understanding of structure and function, postural alignment, breath, subtle anatomy, the Ayurvedic concepts of Prakriti and Vikruti, and the gunas. Philosophical models based on the study of Yoga are used to guide assessment principles; these include:

  • Panchamaya Kosha model
  • Human Chariot Theory
  • Prana Vayus
  • Chakra System
  • Concepts from Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga such as the Yamas and Niyama

Scriptural texts which outline Yogic and Ayurvedic theories and foundations are examined for a deeper understanding of how to use Yogic tools to create inner balance and healing. These texts include:

  • Bhagavad Gita
  • Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras
  • Vedas
  • Upanishad
  • Samkhya Yoga
  • Hatha Pradipika
  • Charaka Samhita

Module Format:

This is a 5-day training, attended live online, which includes 42 hours of classroom lecture-based activities, peer group study, and demonstration of practical skills, and 6 hours of classroom-based practicum with a self-chosen volunteer. 30 hours of home-study practicum and 8 hours of asynchronous learning complete the requirements for this module.

Module Objectives:

  • Gain practical client assessment skills using the teachings and philosophies of the yogic tradition including Samkhya Yoga, Vedas, Upanishads, Ayurveda, Bhagavad Gita, and Charaka Samhita.
  • Ability to take a client history. Create, document, and evaluate individualized yoga therapy programs.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of anatomy and physiology.
  • Understand how subtle anatomy affects client’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being and how this knowledge informs choice of techniques used in yoga therapy routines.
  • Know how Yoga and Ayurveda work together to promote well-being of body, mind, and spirit.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the breadth of Yoga teachings (asanas, meditation, pranayama, diet, yoga philosophy, and more), any contraindication that may apply to each, and how they can be used to help a client therapeutically.
  • Know the principles of energy healing and demonstrate how to send healing energy to others, as well as the roles of prayer and intention.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the importance of the power of the mind, the use of affirmations, visualizations, and mantra.
  • Be familiar with important issues in conducting the business of yoga therapy, how to communicate with health care professionals and how to generate and interpret referral information.
  • Understand how to establish therapeutic relationships with clients, with clear professional and ethical boundaries.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognise and manage the subtle dynamics in the therapeutic relationship.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills, including listening, presence, directive, and non- directive dialogue.
  • Demonstrate a client-centred approach in the therapeutic relationship.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of IAYT scope of practice and code of ethics.

Module Description:

Cultivating the skills of intuitive energy healing is inherent in the training of a yoga therapist. The dynamics of therapeutic relationships are the topic for discussion and practicum; these skills are practiced under supervision during 6-hour practicum in class as well as during home-study practicum with volunteers. Documentation skills for the purpose of referrals to medical practitioners is included in this module, as well as the basics of the business aspect of becoming a yoga therapist. Study of the IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists) scope of practice and code of ethics is included. Role playing is an important mode of instruction in this module.

Final Words:

Prerequisite training for entry into this module: 220-hour certification in a Yoga teacher training course. One year of personal practice. One year of experience in teaching Yoga (minimum of 80 hours). OR Graduate of Sat Sangat Yoga development program, Level 1. (One year of teaching yoga and one year of personal practice is included in the Sat Sangat Level 2 training).
