Course Description:
Musculoskeletal I and II modules combine lectures, group discussion, case-study observation, experiential components, trainee presentations and practicum. For student practicum assignments, volunteer clients are matched with a yoga therapist trainee for three days of supervised yoga therapy across all segments. The practicum includes intake and assessment, private sessions, small group sessions, and program instruction for the client to do at home. Case discussion and plan of action are supervised by faculty. Musculoskeletal II involves additional training in acute and chronic care. All areas of learning in this subject matter are integrated and translated into practical use for people with primarily musculoskeletal issues.

Module Objectives:
By the end of this course students will be able to:
- Work in private sessions, group class settings, and group classes in hospital or clinic environments with clients who have musculoskeletal issues.
- Understand what professional and ethical boundaries are in the therapeutic relationship; display listening and communication skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to recognize and manage subtle dynamics inherent in the therapeutic relationship.
- Work with more acute cases and know when to refer to another health care
- Design class plans as well as adapt their plans to new situations that clients may
- Apply a wide variety of yoga therapy interventions to best suit the needs of the musculoskeletal compromised client.
- Display understanding of the contraindications of yoga therapy protocols for musculoskeletal conditions.
- Demonstrate the ability to research unfamiliar conditions and present findings to peers and other health care providers.
- Know how to assist clients with the researched condition from the perspective of yoga
Learning objectives are demonstrated through assignments, in-class participation, and practicum.
Module Description:
Musculoskeletal II includes classroom exercises with peer and faculty observation and feedback. Group study consultation is important for treatment plan design. During the 6-hour in-class practicum, students are expected to teach group and individual sessions under the supervision of faculty. The focus is on integrating and practicing learned concepts, techniques and skills. Home-study practicum for this module includes 10.5 hours of one-on-one yoga therapy with a volunteer based on the structure shared in the module.
Students will have opportunities to practice:
- Improving intake and assessment skills.
- Improving capacity to evaluate treatment plans.
- Cultivating critical thinking skills.
- How to communicate with potential clients and service providers.
- Learning how to lead and teach appropriate yoga therapy techniques including subtle and gross interventions.
- How to conduct 1:1 and group yoga therapy sessions with regard to musculoskeletal conditions and their subtle body counterparts.
- How to provide daily living advice for maintenance and upkeep for musculoskeletal conditions.
- How to design home routines appropriate to clients’ needs, constitution, and circumstances.
- What is required for follow up monitoring and evaluation.
